Description
Alzheimer's disease results from the gradual degeneration of crucial neurons in the part of the brain that handles cognitive functioning. It is typically a slowly progressing disease affecting mental function. In the final stages, severe mental impairment leads to complete dependence upon caregivers. Alzheimer's disease affects about 6 percent of persons over the age of 65, more than 10 percent of those between 75 and 85, and by some estimates, upward of 20 percent of those over 85.
Signs / Symptons
Alzheimer's disease can progress slowly over a period of ten to fifteen years or it can become steadily worse in a matter of only a few years. In the early stages, there is forgetfulness, especially of recent events, an inability to learn or remember new information, impaired concentration, and deterioration in personal hygiene. Later, as symptoms worsen, memory, language, and motor functions become increasingly impaired and the patient becomes more intellectually and physically disabled. Continuous repetition of words or gestures is characteristic of Alzheimer's disease in its later stages. Personality changes, incontinence, voracious appetite, and a compulsion to put everything in the mouth are other manifestations of the disease. Other symptoms may include anxiety, withdrawal, depression, language difficulties, loss of the ability to write or understand written language, complete loss of ability to communicate verbally, delusions, agitation, combativeness, wandering and frequently getting lost, inappropriate social behavior, failure to recognize friends and family, inability to dress, eat, bathe, or use a bathroom without assistance, and walking difficulty, leading to falls and bedsores.
Cause & Effect
The cause or causes of Alzheimer's disease are under investigation. Postmortem studies have revealed: (1) Higher than normal deposits of aluminum in cerebral tissue. (2) A possible inherited chromosome defect or immune system defect-high levels of antibodies are found in Alzheimer's patients. (3) A history of serious head injury. (4) Below normal levels of choline acetyltransferase and altered levels of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine, somatostatin, substance P, and norepinephrine. The mechanism of the disease is distinctive and is characterized by the death of neurons in the cerebral cortex of the brain, leading to atrophy in the specific brain regions where integration of new information and retrieval of memory take place.
