Description
|

From infancy, this syndrome is characterized by extreme withdrawal and an obsessive desire to maintain the status quo at the expense of outward reality. It becomes apparent in the first or second year of life.

Signs / Symptons
|
|
An infant avoids eye contact and may become rigid when held or may cry when touched. The child becomes self-absorbed, inaccessible, and unable to relate to others, including parents. The child may play happily alone for hours but can have temper tantrums if interrupted. Language disturbances include the repetition of previously heard speech and reversal of the pronouns ‘I’ and ‘you’.

Cause / Effect
|
|
The exact cause of the syndrome is unknown and the prognosis is poor. There appears to be many variables that may contribute to the syndrome. However, irrespective of the causative agent, the main target system is the nervous system. Recent studies have linked autism to the persistent stimulation of the nervous system by biological peptides within the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, some of these active peptides were shown to be derived from the partial or incomplete hydrolysis of proteins such as casein and/or gluten. Some studies have also implicated secretin deficiency as part of the etiology. Due to secretin's role in ensuring bicarbonate sodium secretion to buffer the acidic chime and prevent denaturaion of the pancreatic enzymes, any deficiency in secretin may ultimately impair the digestion of macromolecules, including proteins. Inadequate or partial hydrolysis will result in the production of peptides sometimes 5-6 amino acids that could act as opiods and create behavior and learning problems.

The treatment of autistic children is primarily nutritional in focus. The nutritional connection with autism is an inability to effectively digest certain proteins, specifically casein and gluten. This inability results in the partial digestion of these proteins, thus generating smaller peptides that could act as neurotransmitters and lead to certain physical, behavioral, and/or neural disorders. As such, it is very important that autistic children be able to fully digest their food, including the various proteins. Based on the role played by poorly digested proteins in the manifestation of autistic symptoms, supplementation with effective and GI stable proteolytic enzymes has proven to be beneficial for autistic patients.
