Diabetes
DESCRIPTION
Diabetes is a complex disorder of carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism that
is primarily the result of a deficiency or a complete lack of insulin secretion
by the beta cells of the pancreas or defects of the insulin receptors. Type I diabetes
(formerly called juvenile-onset diabetes) includes patients dependent on insulin
to prevent ketosis. Type II diabetes (adult-onset diabetes) includes those who are
non-insulin dependent. Gestational diabetes is glucose intolerance developed during
pregnancy.
SYMPTONS
Elevated fasting blood glucose levels characterize this chronic disorder of protein,
carbohydrate, and fat metabolism. Classic symptoms of diabetes include excessive
thirst, frequent urination, and increased appetite. Diabetics are more susceptible
to developing heart disease, kidney disease, strokes, loss of vision, and loss of
nerve function.
CAUSE
It is often familial (genetic) but may be acquired. Ninety percent of diabetics
are Type II. Contributing factors to the development of this disorder include obesity,
genetic factors, nutritional deficiencies, environmental conditions, viral infections,
and certain chemical exposures that create autoimmune disorders.
NUTRITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DIABETES
It is important to include healthy fat in the diet with each meal and to choose
carbohydrates with a low glycemic index. Carbohydrates are best eaten in the presence
of proteins and fats. Recommendations include management and monitoring by a physician
of glucose, symptoms, medications, and specific dietary guidelines as well as a
program of nutritional supplementation with enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and glandulars.
The use of enzymes and herbs strengthen the immune system, optimize digestion, help
the cells absorb nutrients, and help the body to eliminate waste. Enzymes and herbs
help control the Diabetes and prevent complications. Under no circumstances should
a diabetic patient be suddenly taken off of insulin or diabetic drugs. A diabetic’s
nutritional supplementation is best monitored by the primary physician since changes
in insulin requirements can change as the body becomes more balanced through enzyme
and herbal supplements.
Enzyme therapy balances the body in several ways. Enzymes support the immune system
by building healthy organs and blood by reducing levels of toxicity from bacteria,
viruses, parasites, heavy metals, pesticides, and radiation poisoning.
**It is important to address the patient’s diet, exercise, and lifestyle on an individual
basis and in regard to body type (see Digestive Balance Protocol). Support
products are recommended as needed based on the patient’s condition. Enzyme therapy
can be used safely in conjunction with other medical therapies.
