Gastro-Esophageal Reflux
DESCRIPTION
Reflux is the backflow into the esophagus of the stomach's contents and is often
the result of lower esophageal sphincter weakness. Gastric juices are acidic and
therefore produce a burning pain in the esophagus. Repeated episodes of this reflux
often results in gastro-esophageal reflux disease (G.E.R.D.).
SYMPTONS
The frequency of acid in the esophagus can cause inflammation of the esophageal
mucos. Other symptoms can include burping, belching, and indigestion accompanied
by discomfort, burning, or irritation of the throat.
CAUSE & EFFECT
The function of the lower esophageal sphincter is to prevent gastric contents from
backing up into the esophagus. This sphincter creates pressure to close the lower
end of the esophagus and then it relaxes after each swallow to allow food into the
stomach. Reflux occurs when lower esophageal sphincter pressure is deficient or
when pressure within the stomach exceeds this lower esophageal sphincter pressure.
TREATMENT GOALS
The traditional medical treatment is to prescribe anti-acids. Yet reflux does not
occur because there is too much acid in the stomach. Anti-acids only mask the problem
and do nothing to correct it. They can even cause long-term digestive problems.
Although another common method of treatment is surgery to repair the lower esophageal
sphincter, more general recommendations include assisting the patient to improve
lower esophageal sphincter pressure, decrease pressure within the stomach, and heal
the irritated lining of the esophagus and stomach through proper nutrition, eating
habits, and enzyme therapy.
**It is important to address the patient’s diet, exercise, and lifestyle on an individual
basis and in regard to body type (see Digestive Balance Protocol). Support
products are recommended as needed based on the patient’s condition. Enzyme therapy
can be used safely in conjunction with other medical therapies.
