Gout
DESCRIPTION
Gout is a systemic disorder marked by elevated blood levels of uric acid (hyperuricemia),
one of the body's waste products.
SIGNS/SYMPTONS
Gout is characterized by sudden and severe arthritis-like pain in a joint (often
in the hands or feet) with swelling and redness around the affected joint. Even
lightly touching the area may be extremely painful. In some cases, fever may be
present and/or deformity may occur. Kidney stones develop about 20% of the time.
ETIOLOGY
It is primarily due to genetic or environmental factors (i.e., heavy metals). The
buildup of uric acid in the blood is a result of overproduction of uric acid, impaired
excretion of it in the urine, or a combination of both. Based on our clinical experience,
we also believe that a lack of protease and the inability to properly hydrolyze
oxidized, glycated, and other proteinaceous debris in the blood circulation constitutes
a contributing factor. As uric acid accumulates in the bloodstream, it may form
deposits of monosodium urate crystals which are needle-like in appearance in the
joints and is often first recognized as inflammation in a single joint. The immune
system responds to these crystals as foreign substances and initiates its inflammatory
response, evidenced by the swollen, painful joint.
RATIONALE
Our clinical experience with gout has been quite successful. The goal is to properly
digest foods (specifically proteins) and support both the kidneys and liver in eliminating
the waste products. Enzyme therapy can also effectively manage the immune response,
manage inflammation. and inhibit the formulation of crystals. Enzyme therapy balances
the body in several ways.Enzymes work to improve digestion and nutrient acquisition.
Enzymes support the immune system by building healthy organs and blood by reducing
levels of toxicity from bacteria, viruses, parasites, heavy metals, pesticides,
and radiation poisoning.
**It is important to address the patient’s diet, exercise, and lifestyle on an individual
basis and in regard to body type (see Digestive Balance Protocol). Support
products are recommended as needed based on the patient’s condition. Enzyme therapy
can be used safely in conjunction with other medical therapies.

PROTOCOL (for Gout)
NUTRITION
While it has always been suggested to limit protein consumption, current findings
are suggesting that gout is not related to protein intake. However, our clinical
findings are based on support with the Supra Body Type diet, which does limit protein
andrecommends eating protein only in proper quantities and with digestive enzymes.
Also, drinking at least 1/2 one's body weight (in ounces) of bottled spring water
each day is very important, as is avoiding alcoholic beverages and controlling stress.*The
above suggestions are intended as a basic guideline. It is always important to address
the patient’s diet, exercise, and lifestyle on an individual basis and according
to body type. Support products may be added as needed based on the patient’s condition.
Enzyme therapy can and often should be used in conjunction with other therapies.
