Headache, Cluster
DESCRIPTION
A type of headache characterized by sudden and intense pain occurring on one side
of the head and centering around the eye. These headaches occur at night during
REM sleep and can last up to several hours. Recurring for periods (or "clusters")
of time, these headaches may be separated by months or years for symptom-free periods.
Cluster headaches are 4 times more common in men than in women, usually occurring
between the ages of 20 and 40.
SIGNS/SYMPTONS
Cluster headaches occur as steady, intense pain around one eye, lasting anywhere
from 30 minutes to 2 hours. The pain may spread to affect an entire side of the
head. Nasal blockage often occurs, followed by profuse watery nasal discharge from
the affected side. Red, watery eyes, drooping eyelids, swollen cheeks, and a flushed
face may also be noted.
CAUSE
The cause of cluster headaches is unknown, but several factors are thought to be
triggers. Heavy smokers and drinkers are at a greater risk. Also, certain foods
are believed to promote these headaches, such as pepperoni, red wine, chicken liver,
active yeast preparations, MSG, and aged cheeses. Emotional duress may also promote
cluster headaches. Nutritional deficiencies is another possibility.
TREATMENT RATIONALE
Since these headaches appear to result from some form of chemical sensitivity or
toxicity, the main focus of enzyme therapy is to assist in alleviating pain, improving
blood circulation, and the removal of toxins. Supporting improved digestion, circulation,
and elimination are key to minimizing the episodes of cluster headaches.
NUTRITION RECOMMENDATIONS
Ensuring adequate water intake (half your body weight in ounces daily) and following
a well balanced diet according to your body type are suggested. Liquid VIBE
micro-nutrient with over 100 minerals, vitamins, and herbs has been found to reduce
the intensity of headaches within 15 minutes when nutritional deficiencies are a
component of the headache. Things that should be avoided include excessive alcohol
intake, cigarette smoke, and any specific food known to trigger the headaches. Some
find that keeping a detailed food diary and/or a headache occurrence log is helpful.
**It is important to address the patient’s diet, exercise, and lifestyle on an individual
basis and in regard to body type (see Digestive Balance Protocol). Support
products are recommended as needed based on the patient’s condition. Enzyme therapy
can be used safely in conjunction with other medical therapies.

PROTOCOL (for Cluster Headache)
*The above suggestions are intended as a basic guideline. It is always important
to address the patient’s diet, exercise, and lifestyle on an individual basis and
according to body type. Support products may be added as needed based on the patient’s
condition. Enzyme and herbal therapy can and often should be used in conjunction
with other therapies.
