Irritable Bowel Syndrome
DESCRIPTION
Often referred to as spastic colon, IBS is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized
by intermittent periods of constipation and diarrhea. Diagnosis is made by ruling
out other disorders such as cancer or regional enteritis. If left uncorrected, it
may progress to more serious conditions such as Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis,
or possibly cancer.
SIGNS/SYMPTONS
IBS is characterized by episodes of alternating constipation, diarrhea, excess gas,
bloating, a feeling that the bowels do not empty completely, abdominal cramping,
pain, and nausea.
CAUSE
The cause of IBS is unknown. However, most believe that emotional stress may be
a contributing factor. Also, certain foods may trigger flare-ups. Common irritants
include foods that tend to be more difficult to digest such as fatty foods, greasy
foods, dairy products, and gas-producing foods.
TREATMENT RATIONALE
Taking supplemental digestive enzymes for the proper digestion of food, supporting
immune function, and balancing the inflammatory response as well as healing and
repairing the mucos- lining of the GI tract are the purposes of enzyme therapy when
working with a patient with IBS.
NUTRITION
Small, frequent meals consisting mainly of protein and vegetables works best to
help resolve an acute episode of IBS. Avoiding high fat foods, spicy foods, and
dairy products is often helpful. Most often, the Neuro Body Type diet is suggested
and has had favorable results.
**Additionally, effective stress management is imperative.
**It is important to address the patient’s diet, exercise, and lifestyle on an individual
basis and in regard to body type (see Digestive Balance Protocol). Support
products are recommended as needed based on the patient’s condition. Enzyme therapy
can be used safely in conjunction with other medical therapies.
