Scleroderma
DESCRIPTION
Scleroderma is a rare condition, also known as systemic sclerosis. It is a diffuse
connective tissue disease characterized by fibrotic, degenerative, and occasionally
inflammatory changes in skin, blood vessels, synovial membranes, skeletal muscles,
and internal organs (especially the esophagus, intestinal tract, thyroid, heart,
lungs and kidneys). This disease effects more women than men and is usually between
the ages of 30 and 50.
SIGNS/SYMPTONS
The number and severity of the symptoms varies dramatically. Progression may be
rapid in the first few years and then slow down or maybe even stop. The most common
symptom is Raynaud's phenomenon, a painful, three-color (white, red, blue) response
of the hands and/or feet to cold exposure or stress. It may be present for many
years without any other symptoms. Changes in the skin is also common. The skin becomes
shiny, tight, and thickened and can give the sufferer a masklike appearance. Other
parts of the body are also affected, often leading to difficulty swallowing, shortness
of breath, palpitations, high blood pressure, joint pain, stiffness, and muscle
weakness.
CAUSE
The cause of scleroderma is unknown and can occur in many forms.
FOR YOUR GROWTH TREATMENT IDEAS AND GOALS
There is no known cure for this disease, but treatment can relieve symptoms and
associated problems. Enzyme therapy balances the body in several ways. Enzymes assist
the immune system and the inflammatory response. Enzymes work to improve digestion
and nutrient acquisition. Enzymes support healthy organs and blood by reducing levels
of toxicity from bacteria, viruses, parasites, heavy metals, pesticides, and radiation
poisoning. Enzyme therapy for scleroderma is also aimed at maintenance of healthy
mucos lining in the GI, respiratory, and urinary tracts. Improving circulation with
protease supplementation and physical activity is also beneficial.
**It is important to address the patient’s diet, exercise, and lifestyle on an individual
basis and in regard to body type (see Digestive Balance Protocol). Support
products are recommended as needed based on the patient’s condition. Enzyme therapy
can be used safely in conjunction with other medical therapies.
